Client

FTI Consulting is a global advisory firm supporting organizations through periods of complexity, change, and high-stakes decision-making. With multidisciplinary expertise across financial, legal, regulatory, and strategic matters, the firm partners with clients to navigate critical challenges and long-term transformation.

Challenges

Context

Boards of directors, compensation committees, and professional advisers operate under heightened regulatory scrutiny and ongoing investor oversight. Comprehensive executive compensation guidance needed visual support to enable clearer, more practical interpretation for time-constrained decision-makers.

Initial Limitations

The source material followed a conventional, text-heavy regulatory format that prioritized completeness over navigability. While the structure was logically sound, long explanatory paragraphs and minimal visual hierarchy made selective reading and rapid orientation more demanding for professional readers. Key regulatory concepts were embedded within dense narrative text, with limited visual emphasis. As a result, locating and interpreting critical information required increased cognitive effort, particularly in review and reference-driven use cases.

Project Goals

The goal was to support fast and accurate interpretation of complex executive compensation guidance by a professional audience. The material needed to become more visually communicative while preserving the document’s authoritative, conservative tone and legal precision.

Approach

Content Strategy

The content was analyzed at the paragraph level to identify areas where structural clarity was more important than interpretive nuance. Because even minor textual changes or additions were not permissible, the strategy focused on introducing visual hierarchy, rhythm, and emphasis. A consistent two-column layout was applied throughout the document, with key sections visually separated and highlighted, and spacing and intentional visual pauses used across the material.

Visual Language

The visual language remained restrained and professional, in line with FTI Consulting’s established corporate identity. Typography and certain other details were applied with precision, addressing some inconsistencies observed across other published materials. The imagery followed FTI’s preference for real-world photography, selected with a subtle, near-abstract approach.

Impact

Orientation

The refined visual structure supports fast orientation within a dense document. Clear section boundaries, consistent layout logic, and deliberate visual pauses allow professional readers to quickly locate relevant topics, move non-linearly through the material, and return to specific sections with confidence during review or verification scenarios.

Scanability

The introduced visual rhythm significantly reduced cognitive load when navigating long, technical passages. By breaking dense explanatory text into more visually manageable units, complex guidance became easier to scan, process, and revisit, supporting efficient reading under time constraints.

Authority

The restrained visual treatment reinforced the document’s role as an authoritative reference rather than a promotional asset. By avoiding decorative excess and preserving disciplined visual language, the material maintained its professional credibility and aligned with the expectations of boards, advisers, and other decision-makers.
